The shipping industry is celebrating the groundbreaking of a new lock chamber along the Mississippi River.

Lock and Dam 25 is the southernmost lock on the river. It was first built in 1939, and most grain going to the Gulf of Mexico passes through it.

The lock will now be able to host a 15-barge tow, transporting more than 800,000 bushels of soybeans in one single pass.

The project is expected to be completed in 2034.

Executive Director of the Soy Transportation Coalition, Mike Steenhoek spoke with RFD-TV’s own Tammi Arender on the project’s background, how it benefits the ag sector, and how it benefits the supply chain.
