Commodity checkoff dollars are helping the Waterways Council educate the public and lawmakers in DC about the importance of lock and dam infrastructure.

Senior Vice President Deb Calhoun tells Brownfield they ran a campaign inside the beltway last year that included a 30 second TV commercial and short videos showing how inland waterways contribute to the environment, economy, and US competitiveness.

“We also created a few high-end animated videos to explain for example how a lock works, what a lock is and why it is important to modernize that infrastructure on the inland waterway system.”

She says the campaign is funded mostly through checkoff dollars from state and national commodity groups and shipping groups.
