SAVERTON, Mo. (WGEM) - An environmental project coming to the Mississippi River south of Hannibal is aimed at helping the local fish habitat. Money from the federal infrastructure bill is going to help build a fish ladder at Lock and Dam 22 in Saverton.

The idea is to give fish an easier way to move upstream and help them survive.

“Right now, the fish can go through the lock and dam when the gates are open,” said chairman of the Upper Mississippi Illinois Missouri Rivers Association Mike Klingner. “But right now, there are periods of time when the gates are not open and this will allow a little better passage area. It’s (also) kind of a research to see if the passage could work in other locks and dams where there are more restrictions.”

Klingner says they hope the $97 million project can get started in the next year or two.
