March 23–A project to modernize the Tenney Boat Lock facility is beginning this week and will keep the lock closed until it’s completed, according to a spokeswoman for the Dane County Land and Water Resources Department.
The project will upgrade the existing infrastructure with mechanical and electrical upgrades to the lock and add remote controls to the dam that will allow staff to control lake levels, according to spokeswoman Erika Hotchkiss. The goal is to have the project completed by early summer, she said.
The lock, located on the Yahara River at the outlet of Lake Mendota, allows for the passage of boats between lakes Mendota and Monona.
“The weather has provided a great opportunity for us to start the project,” County Executive Joe Parisi said in a statement. “This project is important to insure the lock operates efficiently for the thousands of boats that pass through each year.”
